How to Be Calm in the Middle of Chaos
Sometimes in the middle of a great transition or even on a daily transportation ride, you can feel consumed by the chaos happening around you. These mindfulness techniques will help guide you back to your center when it seems like your center feels far away.
Anchoring Yourself
The idea of anchoring is being a solid rock when the water comes at your feet. Water is a beautiful force. It is shapeless and powerful in its everlasting beauty and the rock is strong, wise, and firm. Rock is built of up years of sedimentation that has condensed to create a powerful form. Water and the rock don’t fight with each other but exist together. The water doesn’t change the rock and the rock doesn’t change the water. If the rock allows itself to be moved by the water, it will break down or be carried away. The key is to be anchored and strong in your center. Finding your center in itself seems metaphorical and challenging to do when surrounded by strong currents of water, like the hustle and bustle of everyday life or seemingly anchoring situations. This is where we have to identify what your center means to you so that you can anchor in that and be like the rock when the rushing water of life is near.
What is your Center?
What does it mean to come to your center? When you are coming to your center, you are connecting to the unfiltered version of yourself, the feeling you get of pure happiness, the gut feeling of being sad, and embracing pure emotions. Listening to your spirit to calm yourself is a way of coming to your center in the middle of chaos. You can heighten this connection by feeding your spirit with the Word of the Lord, meditation, and prayer. All of these components heighten your awareness and strengthen your ability to remain calm when your outside stimulus seems a bit hectic. To practice connection to your spirit, simple breathing exercises are great ways to begin. You can move these into prayers that god will speak to you and bring you peace.
Practicing mindful breathing is an effective way to stabilize your body when triggered by many sensations that may feel uncontrollable. When you are mindfully breathing, you are feeling the sensation of your diaphragm filling with air and falling as you exhale. Breath is the indicator of life. When you are focused on your breath, you are experiencing life in your own body with your unique experience. As you breathe in, accept calm and warmth to your spirit. You are okay in this moment and everything happening around you cannot anchor you. The chaos is merely water around you; beautiful bodies of water, and you are centered in love, peace, and compassion.
The author describes a character
This exercise allows you to encounter certain details of your experience that you may overlook if you’re swept in the chaos. When you read a book, you are invested in the character the author describes because the author goes into great detail about the person.
This example of putting on a jacket can be an experience rather than a regular thoughtless action. This assists in mindfulness and mindful movements. An author may describe putting on the jacket as a hassle or they may describe the details of the jacket. Perhaps the jacket is super warm and there may be beads of sweat dripping down the character’s face. Maybe the feeling of the jacket brought them back to a nostalgic time when they had an article of clothing similar to the one they are currently wearing. They go into detail about the smell of the jacket and if there is a type of perfume or the smell of a bonfire from the night before. this detailing places you as more of a center of your experience than allowing the outside commotion to control your thoughts. I love using this practice when I feel that I have been on autopilot or when I simply need to remind myself of how amazing and interesting I can be.
