Why You Seem Like a Stranger to Yourself

Have you ever sat alone with yourself in a quiet room and felt as though you couldn't take the silence? It's normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes and when we have all of our thoughts build-up, we have to learn to re-center ourselves.

We hear a lot about self-love and awareness but what does that mean if you have trouble sitting alone with yourself? In this blog post I will discuss the reasons Why You Seem Like a Stranger to Yourself in these points:

  • Acknowledge Thoughts That can seem Overcrowding

  • How to Trust Your Decisions

  • Turning the Uncomfortable into Comfortable

Acknowledge Thoughts That Can Seem Overcrowding

It is always important to set aside some time for yourself to sit in silence and meditation. Whether this meditation is in the form of journaling or strolling through nature, the connection to your inner self is what makes the meditation worth it. Have you ever noticed that when you get a moment to sit with yourself, your mind won’t stop racing? It is okay to have thoughts that may come up in our quiet time, for in our human experience we are simply replaying the things that are important to us or strike a certain emotion our minds want to convey. When you are sitting in silence, simply acknowledge these thoughts that may arise. We shouldn't fight with ourselves because that is what causes dissonance. For example, if you are sitting in the grass out in a park and have thoughts of a fight you had with an old friend approach speak to it like so; I acknowledge this thought and let it pass. Be sure to return to the sensation of your breath, for you are alive and being kind to yourself by being present. This is a mindfulness practice that helps us connect to ourselves while being approachable to life’s offerings. Using this acknowledgment process is what trains our minds to handle life's capricious situations.

How to Trust Your Decisions

In order to be a better friend to yourself, you have to learn to trust your thoughts and decisions. In a relationship with friends and family, trust and love are what keep the connection strong. It's okay if things seem a little uneasy at first. In my personal experience, I would have to talk things out with myself to reassure my body and mind, that we are making a decision that aligns well with me.

Start by practicing making small decisions with solely your guidance. Think about the outcome and check in with your body to see if it aligns well with you. You can understand if a decision feels good but placing a hand on your stomach and feeling for anything unsettling. Is your body cringing? If so, what is something about the decision that doesn't sit well with you? This is how we make intuitive decisions and build trust with our bodies to help us.

Turning the Uncomfortable into Comfortable

When I was getting to know myself, I found it hard to sit in silence. I needed to constantly be around people or talk to someone on the phone. This is an extension of learning to trust your decisions. If you are first starting out in your mindfulness journey, you may reach that block of discomfort in the silence. you may fidget or feel like you're drowning in your own thoughts. Instead of turning away from this uncomfortable feeling, sit through it for a moment and acknowledge it. The discomfort will not last forever however, since the body has settled, there are things being brought up that were repressed throughout your daily experiences. This is a good thing to face these feelings. Breathe through this discomfort, and even shed a few tears if you feel led to. It's important to find peace in these moments so that when tapping into your true self, there is nothing hindering your subconscious.

Take Away Trail

Going through the motions of life can take us away from our center. Perhaps you may have stopped doing your favorite hobby or you've been feeling disassociated from the world that when you get a moment to sit with yourself, you aren't even sure if you find it enjoyable anymore. These tips are to help you in your path to reconnecting with yourself so you can continue to grow.
